Across all of my placements, I have seen interactive whiteboards (IWBs) used in every single classroom. Similarly, I have used IWBs in my own practice. There are many benefits to using them and below are some of the key reasons:
1) Interactive whiteboards are.... interactive
Many children are very visual learners and therefore IWBS allow children to easily engage in the lesson. A good example of this was my use of the interactive whiteboard in phonics. I used the IWB to show a robot animation that converted text to robot speech, this hooked the children into the lesson (see below). I then showed words with the sound that we were looking at and using activ inspire, a whiteboard application, the children could come up to the front and draw some sound buttons underneath the words.

2) A screen to show stories / film on.
IWB's can add another dynamic when reading stories to a class. Using the projector, the IWB can act as a big screen so that children can follow along and see the pictures. This means that children can see what the teacher is seeing and can help in the development of their reading. It can also encourage reading for pleasure as children get the most out of stories and so are more likely to read at home.
